A guest at the Royal Wedding

29 April 2011 was an amazing, yet grueling day for me. As an American living near London, it seemed only fitting to take the earliest train possible in to London to see the Royal Wedding. My husband, ever supportive, agreed to make the journey with me. So we set out on the 06:20 train from Burnham-On-Crouch, Essex to London Liverpool Street station. We jumped on the tube and headed to Green Park station. We walked and walked, only to be told at the entrance to the park that we wouldn't be able to get any further than the big screen in the park and that the area nearest the Palace was full and closed. I almost believed the guy, but my husband knows better. So we walked some more. And we ended up just to the side of Buckingham Palace. Then the wait began.

Not much happened. A few cars came and went. We listened intently to the radio as events unfolded and the description of the Alexander McQueen wedding gown was revealed. We were advised that both hats and fascinators were indeed still in style! We learned of the arrivals of Elton John, the Beckhams, dignitaries, politicians, family members, friends and royals. We got a description of Westminster Abbey and the hoards of people there. We passed the time, got an official brochure and held on to our precious spot.

The band came through, but on the other side of the roundabout, so we couldn't see much. Finally, the band came back around and everyone got in to place for the arrivals!

I switch to the longer lens! Many shots done with my camera held up to get over everyones heads!

Wallasea Island, Essex and Vintage Spring Samples

As a photographer living in Burnham-On-Crouch, Essex, I have leaps and bounds of great locations to scout and think about. Now I'll be the first to admit, I'm no landscape photographer. This tends to be very hard to understand to my husband, who thinks any kind of photographer should be able to take great landscape photographs. The thing is, I got my degree from the Art Institute of Colorado. I studied Ansel Adams and his Zone System. I get when a landscape image is great. I don't see greatness like that in any landscape image I've ever taken. (Except maybe a couple in Santorini, Greece- and oh!- I have some nice ones from a visit to Cambridge too.) I DO however, love to work with people. Now put a living being in a landscape and I'm happy as a hamster!

Regardless of these facts, we decided to take the dogs on a little boat excursion to Wallasea Island. It was the first boat ride EVER for our 2 fearless friends, and, per usual, it was a bit of a challenge for Molson. (He's our golden retriever.) These 2 have been in cars, on planes, in parades and all sorts. They are real troupers and always up for an adventure. So we piled on the boat and went to the other side of the Crouch River. I took my Nikon D2X with my 35-80mm lens.

I don't actually think these images are over the top thrilling, but I do love the textures! Turns out this island is mostly farm land, so there really isn't much to see. We did, however, have a wonderful walk in the sunshine and for Molson and Zuzu, that's the best!

So I thought I'd take a couple of images and show the before and after of what I can do to add a vintage touch to them. Vintage seems to be all the rage right now and I love the looks. It's not for everybody though, but I thought I'd take a stab of showing you the possibilities.

And for the finale, to keep things interesting and a little bit racy... Butterflies procreating!

This last Saturday I had the pleasure of an adventure with friends in London's Borough Market. If you're not familiar with this part of London, it's a wonderful weekend food market under the London Bridge. Now I'm going to give you the straight up truth here. One: I love food. Two: I don't always take my camera on my adventures. So this is a little out of the box for me and I mighta, woulda, coulda took more pictures than I did, but mostly I was stuffing my face! This place might not make it in to your tourist book or things to do in London list, but it should. If you love food, the hustle and bustle of a busy market and strange and wonderful things, this is the place to go. If you see me there next time, I just might have my camera around my neck again!

Brides speak out on what they want from their photographer

I just read an interesting article on another blog about what brides want from their photographer. Seems today nearly 80% of (American) brides want a disc only package. This is up quite a bit from 6 years ago, when only about 20% were after the same thing. Seems the shift happened due to some frustration on the bride's part toward their experience with their photographer. Interesting concept, you might ask? I thought so. So a poll was done and this is what came up:

1. Brides were disappointed in how long it took to see their images. They were expecting to see them in days, not weeks! I'm glad to say, I've pretty much got that covered. If you're on a social networking site, I'll give you several images straight away and usually have the rest up to your web gallery within a week!

2. Brides didn't like that the photographer presented so many images and didn't offer to help make the selections for the album. They want the expertise of the photographer to help them through the process. Oh good! I've got that covered too. Once your gallery is up, I predesign your first album draft. You then have the chance to view your images and make 2 full sets of changes which are included in your album price! I won't leave you hangin'!

3. Brides wanted to proof their album online. They've done the majority of their planning online and are surprised when they have to meet with their photographer so many times. After the wedding, things get busy, picking up where every day life had been put on hold. No worries. All album design approvals are done online with Faith Stone Photography. If you want to get together, I'm happy to, of course. But if life is just really busy for you, and the only time you have is your lunch break, then do it online!

This is all just part of the experience that I've been delivering for years. Now you know one of the differences between a full time professional and a weekend warrior. I strive to make your photography experience enjoyable and easy. So sit back, relax and enjoy your images!

As an American photographer in Essex, I understand that I'm different. As I've said in a previous blog post, I was a little uncomfortable with this at first. Not much, just a little. But after living here in the UK for over 5 years, I feel like this is home now. I feel comfortable now. I understand that it's the DIFFERENCES that work for me! So I thought I'd share a few things that I do differently when it comes to wedding photography collections. If you're looking for an Essex (and surrounding counties) wedding photographer, these options might interest you. If you're a wedding photographer, you might consider adding some of these options to your collections!

1. My collections are straight forward and I offer a contract with every wedding booked. This is important because my bride and groom know exactly what they get before they make the first payment.

2. It's easy for couples to choose me as the person who will provide them with the lasting memories of their special day. Once we've chatted about which collection will suit them best, payments can be made via cash, cheque or Paypal. My standard payment plan is in 3 installments, but other arrangements can be made, depending on how far in advance they book. Note to couples: The earlier, the better, the easier!

3. Any couple can choose to have a Gift Registry with Faith Stone Photography. They set the limit and guests can easily purchase Wedding Photography Gift Vouchers using Paypal via my secure website. This is great for established couples who want extra product credit toward their album.

4. The majority of my collections include a FREE engagement session. This is like the walk through on a bride's hair and make up. It's important to see what great results we can produce and to feel more confident on the wedding day. Many people have never or rarely been photographed by a professional. This is the time to get some great images and have some fun! I offer some great product options like Guest Books, Signature Mats, and Save the Date cards or magnets that will help the couple make their wedding unique and special.

5. My collections don't lock couples in to a specific product before I've even taken the images! This is where the Product Credit, mentioned above, comes in. I understand that it can be enough just to find the right photographer for your special day. That done, let's think about the final products once we've seen the images. Every couple's day is different and reflects their own personal style. As a specialist in Wedding Albums, I'll take the couples style in to account when recommending an album choice. A product credit is included in the collection, so the funds are already in place.

6. Which brings me to my unique line of albums on offer. Not many photographers offer the album lines that I do. I've been documenting weddings for over a decade and have tried and true suppliers. I started these vendor relationships while I lived in Colorado and wouldn't think of changing them. Luckily, they all are happy to provide their services and products to me in the UK! Lucky you. This means you're album is going to match your personal style and non of your friends will have the same book! (Well, unless you referred them to me and they chose that book. But it will still vary in style and substance, of course!)

Being an American photographer in England isn't always easy. I get the "mick" taken out of me on a regular basis. I'm used to it now, and find most people do it in an amicable way. I've even learned to EMBRACE it. Sometimes I take a little "mick" back, in an amicable American way, of course. It's true, I probably say "awesome" a little too often. I forget that "groovy" isn't a commonly used word anymore, but I use it anyway. I once told people after the group shot at a wedding that they could "take off" for the reception, only to hear a few chuckles and gentle jousting. Hey, I'm not always the hippest person in a crowd, but once you meet me, you won't soon forget me! I figure that works to my advantage, as long as I'm behaving myself.

I just read an article by Julia Boggio in the April edition of Photo Professional magazine. Julia is an American who has been living in Britain for over a third of her life. She's got a bit of time on me for that one! I've only lived here for 5 years. She's also married to a Welshman. She's got me on that one too. I'm married to an American. An American from Michigan at that. If I really think about it, the men from Wales and those from Michigan are quite similar! Anyway, I digress, as usual. Back to the article. Julia starts the article by talking about the American work ethic and how she's worked most of her life, even while in school. She goes on to say how ingrained us Americans are about customer service. Now I've often spoke with friends from all walks of life and from different countries about customer service. It comes up most easily when customer service is lacking. But one time, this couple we were speaking to had gone on a cruise run by Americans and actually complained that the customer service was over the top- too much. I gave a big "huh" and contemplated that. Now having been in the UK for some time, I get it. When one becomes accustomed to, let's say, lesser customer service standards (whether it be Britain or anywhere else!,) one can be overwhelmed by 3 different girls in a shop asking how they can help you. This now irritates me when I go back to the States.

Here's the thing. It doesn't really matter where you're from, I'm sure you'd agree that GOOD customer service is likely to bring you back to that supplier again. EXCELLENT customer service will even get you referring that business to friends. If a business is referral based, believes in the product and/or service that they provide and enjoy what they do, awesome customer service is a no brainer. Photography is such a business. Yet occasionally I hear horror stories about what has happened to people concerning their wedding photography. One story was so sad that I offered her a free "Cherish the Dress" photo session so she could at least have some nice images. I won't say who the photographer was, but the venue she got married at still refers him. The last thing the girl said to me was that he didn't even TRY to make anything right in the end. He could have offered her the same "Cherish the Dress" session as I offered her.

There is a dream in America. It's called the American Dream. It's ingrained in us from an early age. We are taught that ANYONE can become president. (Well, anyone who is American, that is. And YES, Obama is an American, despite those who would like to believe otherwise. Last I checked, Hawaii is still a state!) It reminds us that whether we're from the Carolinas or from California, whether we're yellow or white in skin, whether we're richer or poorer, we all have the chance to become somebody. If we work hard and keep picking ourselves up when we fall, we can all become something great. I'd like to think that I've acclimated to life in Britain and I'll be down the pub with the next guy. But in my heart, I will always be an American. I own a British flag and fly it with the rest of the Brits. I also own an American flag and fly in on the 4th of July. I agree with Julia that business is business and that solid principles are the same no matter where you're from. I, for one, will keep offering my brand of American customer service. I know it works and if you want to take the "mick," go for it! I'll just smile and nod my head.

I know I just wrote a post on an album, but I just had a consultation with a couple who were gifted a customized album to use for their wedding. Although designing story book albums is my specialty, I understand that different couples have different desired products from their wedding photography. For that matter, every client has slightly different desires on how they'd like to use their images. And I think that's great! I'm recording moments in time. That's what I do. I do this for the client. That's what they hire me to do. I don't tell people what they should or must do with their images. But evidently, some photographers do. Just sayin'.

I thought I'd take a moment, however, to show you some images of the wide variety of albums that I offer. I offer a variety, well, because there are a wide variety of people out there. Some couples are having very traditional weddings and want a more traditional looking album. Some are having a funky groovy wedding and want a funky groovy album. I want my couples to have an album that compliments their style, their vision. For the most part, a wedding day is one of the most fantastic days in a person's life. (The honeymoon can be pretty special too:) Why shouldn't they have a fantastic album to match? Albums with Essex Photographer, Faith Stone Photography

One of my specialties is albums. I love designing them (after all, I do have an Associate of Art degree- I guess it's good for something!) and I love working with couples to make it perfect for them. When an album is part of a package, I predesign the album. Some photographers just leave it with the couple to choose the images for their album, but I have found this to be overwhelming for the couple. In the predesign, I work up a first draft so the couple at least has a place to start. It is designed with their budget in mind (usually in the form of a Product Credit within their package) and the knowledge that I gain while attending and witnessing their event. Some photographers farm out their album designing, but I like the personalization of doing it myself.

Louise recently looked over her 1st draft and made some very precise and wonderful changes. I'm happy to say, it's ready to view. Every couple gets 2 sets of changes after the 1st predesign. The first set of changes are typically major and the couple takes their time with this one. The 2nd set of changes is so we can tweak anything that didn't come out just right. Of course, more changes can be made, but these first 2 are included in every album ordered. It takes a little more of my time, but it's worth it to my couples. And that's what my business is all about.

Fun Essex Wedding Photography!

Getting married can be an expensive undertaking, as most of you know! A great way to save some cashola is to choose a wedding date during the week. There are discounts on almost every vendor for such a choice. This isn't the perfect decision for everyone, but if you're having a little bit more intimate wedding and you know all the perfect people will be able to join your perfect day during the week, go for it!

Tuesday, 8 February 2011 was a magical day for Keisha and Shaun. They exchanged rings at Prested Hall in Colchester, Essex. It wasn't even believable what good weather we had!

Keisha found me through a site that I advertise on. I responded to her inquiry with a rough estimate and the chance to look over my website to see if she liked my style of photography. That, I believe, is a very important start! If you don't like the photography, the price is meaningless. We scheduled a consultation and found a suitable package for them.

Turns out Shaun is in the Army. This prompted me to offer some bonuses to their package as a way of saying Thank You. Thanks to all the guys who make this country a safer and nicer place to live. Whether your in the American armed forces ('cuz I'm American,) the British armed forces or any other man or women who defends their country, hat's off to you!

On to the day: I can't even describe how much I laughed at this wedding. It was clear that everyone there was there for this couple. When I checked in with Keisha before she entered the ceremony, she was relaxed and OH SO READY to become Mrs. Wildney. While waiting for her to walk down the aisle, there was laughter and good hearted jibbing with Shaun and just the sense that everyone was relaxed and ready to have a great time. I thought to myself as I laughed along, what a great day this is going to be!

And indeed it was. For this blog post, I'm going to share more UNconventional shots that I took at this wedding. This couple is young, vibrant, alive and full of fun. Their friends and family were in the same spirit, so why not go with it? I believe I captured their day, their way.

Frequently Asked Wedding Photography Questions and Anwers

1. What should I look for when choosing a wedding photographer?

There are 4 main things you should look for:

1st- Do you like the style of the images that the photographer is

displaying? Can you picture yourself happily in the same

style of images? If the answers are yes, press on!

2nd- Do you like the photographer and do you think you’ll feel

comfortable with them on your wedding day? It’s

important that your personalities are compatible so that you

feel confident and at ease with your photographer. This

makes for relaxed and natural images. Doing an engagement

session with them before your wedding date will not only

help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera, it will

also give a preview of what’s to come. Most of my packages

come with a free engagement session.

3rd- Think of your photography as an investment, like buying a

car or an appliance. You want your wedding memories to

suit you and your requirements. Ask yourself what you

want in the end- an album? traditional or story book style?

artwork for your walls? digital photo frame? Does the

photographer you’re considering offer the type of keepsake

that you’re looking for?

4th- Stick to the wedding photography experts. Find out how

much experience they have and get a contract that outlines

your expectations. Photographing weddings is unlike any

other type of photography. The day moves fast and

typically there’s a list of “must have” shots. Lighting

conditions vary and posing people is an art form! An

experienced and professional wedding photographer will be

able to handle all these variables.

2. How do I tell the difference between an amateur & a professional?

One simple test is to look closely at their work. Do the poses

look natural and fun? Do the images look properly exposed?

Do they seem to have a good grip on design principles in their

albums? Ask them if they do photography full time. Do they have

a professional looking website? Do they have references on their

site or another site? Find out if they are a member of a

professional organisation like SWPP. Do they have any special

training or a degree? Are they insured? Do they offer a contract?

3. Why is there such a wide variety of prices among wedding photographers?

The answer to this question is largely a part of question 2.

Wedding photography is a rather specialised field. Some

photographers design albums themselves and others contract it

out. The onset of digital is a double edged sword. More people

are getting in to wedding photography, which is great because it

gives you more choices. On the other hand, many of these new

photographers have not yet acquired the proper tools for the job.

This means not just equipment, but training and experience. We

now do post production ourselves, rather than a lab processing

film. Post production is a whole other set of skills and can be done

better by some than others. There is also a great deal of products

that a photographer can offer. As with anything, some of these

are much better than others. Lasting keepsakes, like a good car,

are worth what you pay for them. If a photographer is offering

you a price that seems too good to be true, like anything, it

probably is! Saving money in the short term may end up costing

you more in the long run. Again, be sure you know what you are

getting before you sign the contract!

Psycho Dog Photography

Ok. So maybe the title is a little over the top! But seriously, these four dogs have a blast together and I couldn't even begin to keep up with their combined energy fields! Here's some favs from a walk on St. Lawrence Beach, Essex starring: Kramer, Zuzu and Molson. Florence was there too, but I didn't manage to get any images of her- she may be the runt of the litter, but she's bouncy!

I chose to run some of my new Vintage action on these. Storyboards are available as prints, acrylics or canvas art.

Christmas Wedding In Somerset

Don't you know, this is a long time coming! In all fairness, the majority of the Western World seems to shut down around the holidays. So I went ahead and took some time off too. I managed not to get the sickies that were going around, as my nephew and brother came for a visit from the states. We met up with some friends in Edinburgh and had a hoot of a time at Hogmanay. The day I put my relatives back on the plane, the sickies descended upon me full force! Timing is everything...

But enough about me, let's talk about this excellent couple who waited patiently for their images!

This is Ben and Louise. Louise found me at a wedding fair when I still lived in Somerset. By the time we got the chance to chat, I was half way moved to Essex. I explained my situation and that I don't charge additional for mileage anyway, so no worries that I'll be on the other side of the country. They must of really liked my photography, 'cuz they took it all in and put a contract in the mail.

You may have seen this couples engagement images last year. We had a great time in Dunster, Somerset shooting in the gardens and at the Railway Station. Of course, Ben told me that he's not photogenic. Like I haven't heard that before! Well let me tell you something, this couple shines from the inside out. They are natural, funny and full of spirit. And that, my friend, is what makes a great image.

Before their wedding date, the sky opened up and dumped snow all over this country. Snow like the UK has never seen before. Mind you I'm in Essex now and planning my trip to Somerset to photograph the event of a lifetime for this couple. So I call Louise a couple of days before the wedding and ease any worries she may have about me making it there. Hey, I'M FROM COLORADO! Say no more...

Although some guests didn't make it to this wonderful wedding, I'm blessed to have been a part of the magical day. Louise and Ben spent hours upon hours of planning and it showed in every detail. I can only imagine what memories they'll have and what stories they'll tell of the snowy Christmas wedding that they enjoyed. Their day was unique, thanks to Mother Nature and careful planning.

Rumor has it that they're going with a "Virgin White Kiss Wedding Book." I love this book, because it is bound with a seamless spread that lays flat. The leather is sumptuous and it's a meaty book to hold. The colour choice will compliment the snowy atmosphere of their day and bring it all together. See, I'm not just a photographer, I'm a designer. I want to think of everything my decade of experience allows me to and make the perfect product for my clients. Ok, ok. I only SUGGESTED this book. Of course, Louise (and maybe Ben) have the final word!

Christmas Weddings

I've been thinking about what I'd like to say about Christmas and the thought came to me that I'd really just like to skip it. Make like everyone is too busy this time of year, no one will read this post and I won't have to be witty about a holiday that I'm not so keen on anyway. Bah humbug, right? Ok. I admit it. I'm a halloween baby, so Christmas is an after thought to me!

So then I got to wondering, what positive things can I say about this holiday that everyone seems to cherish so much? I needed to think about what Christmas means to me, 'cuz I don't have the same take as other people, I think. So what did I do? I cleaned the house. And joy of joy, my husband just picked up a mop and cleaned right along with me! "Ha" I thought. Now THAT'S what my Christmas is about.

And it really comes in all kinds of packages. This morning I was remembering some of my favorite teachers. You know the ones. The ones that made a difference. One of those for me was Mr. Hunt at Upton Junior High, St. Joseph, Michigan. He was my english teacher. I remember he hollered at me one day because I was scribbling away in a note book when I was supposed to be listening to some boring lecture on grammar. I was a bit embarrassed, not at being hollered at in front of the whole class, but for my excuse for not listening. (Actually, I've always been a good multi-tasker and in fact WAS listening!) So when Mr. Hunt asked me what was so important that I should be writing away instead of listening, I, uh, told the truth. I told him I was copying a poem I really liked from a book. He paused, probably a bit stunned, then smiled from ear to ear! "Carry on, Ms. Stone. Carry on." And so I did.

I'll never forget Mr. Hunt. He gave me a love for literature, for poetry, for language. Later, I had a lit teacher called Mr. Driscoll at Interlochen Arts Academy, Michigan, where I went to High School. I think most of the girls at school were head over heels for him. I guess I might have been a little bit too, but I found a boy that year that was my own age. That made more sense to me than some silly crush on a teacher who seemed happily married anyway. Mr. Driscoll, did, however, keep the fire in my heart for literature alive. Like Mr. Hunt, I'd like to thank them for that.

So what's all this got to do with Christmas? Well, when I think of these people who made such a difference in my life, I think of how great I've got it. I figure I got it so great because these people shared a passion with me. They shared their love of literature. And it made a difference. It made a difference to ME. It made me a better person and it made me want to do something similar for others.

Christmas is, if nothing else, a time to be grateful for loved ones- past and present- and celebrate the love we have to share. As far as photography goes, some can look at it like- UGH! I don't want to work over the holidays and the light is so, well, not there much! Personally, I choose to look at like this: Heck, I think it's a great time of year to share love. That makes it a great time of year to get married. It also means you may not need to spend so much on flowers because most venues decorate for the holidays anyway! Bonus!

So here's a couple of my favorite Christmas wedding images. I've got a great one coming up too. I'm so excited because we're going to have loads of those "bonus" decorations in Dunster Village, Somerset, UK. It's a medieval village. It's gonna be so cool. But mostly it's gonna be cool because the couple are in love. They're excited and their happy. So whether I believe in Santa or not, even if I'm not over the moon about the day itself, I do embrace the spirit. And I'm open for a Christmas wedding 2011!

Essex Baby Bump Photography

This post is a long time coming and apologies to those who waited so long! See, I'm an American in England. Of course, England doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving- I mean, why would they? Although this American holiday is lost on a few Brits, I think many WOULD like to have a similar holiday. But I digress so quickly. This is all leading up to my excuse as to why it took so long to blog this Baby Bump session. According to my excellent record keeping, I shot this the second week in October. So really, I have no excuses! There, now on to the shoot.

Cory is another American in England. Only she's now in Scotland and soon to go back to America. I met her when a coworker of my husband's brought her out to England for a week. She was young and very pretty, so naturally, I didn't really like her much at first. Hehe. Just kidding! We were at a mutual friend's house and Robert and I were outside chatting. I asked him about this girl he brought over and what was the scoop. Yeh, I know. Sounds like his mom, right? But being the perfect gentleman that he is, he voiced his opinions on the subject in a diplomatic way. I was like, whatever. YOU SHOULD MARRY HER! I mean, she wasn't going back to America to just hang out and wait. I guess he gave that advice some thought, 'cuz he married her. That was great for me, 'cuz I got a new friend with the deal. She's a great friend and I have been privileged to document many special moments in their lives. The most recent, of course, being Cory's first pregnancy. And WOW! it's a doozy. I never seen a 5'3" women with such a protrusion!

Cory, her husband Robert, Lily the Wonder Dog and little Miss Amelia are moving back to the good 'ole USA in January. They will be much missed. Here's a taste of what a Baby Bump photo session can bring. (And yes, I always get permission before sharing images.)

Playing catch up here and about to show you a couple I photographed back in July 2010. Lucina found me at wedding fair and took me up on a limited time offer of a deeply discounted engagement photo session here in Burnham-On-Crouch, Essex. First we did some lovely Mother-Daughter pics, then Daniel came along and we went for a wee walk down to the waterfront and park. Burnham is a great place for location portraiture because there's such a great variety of places to choose from. This couple doesn't have a date picked yet, but I know I'd be honored should they choose me to document their wedding day!

I'm so Lucky

So the light is dimming earlier and winter is upon us. I actually love fall, but I have to admit, winter is not my favorite season. I'm from Colorado and there never seems to be a lack of light there. Although I've been in England for about 5 years now, I'm still not quite adjusted to the lack of light this time of year! Sometimes I even get down right bummed and home sick. I'm very lucky, though, because I have a wonderful golden retriever named Molson (he's Canadian, therefore the name) a mixed breed dog called Zuzu (her original name was Juju, but I misunderstood the lady at the rescue centre and just decided Zuzu sounded better. She seems to be ok with it too. The dog, not the lady at the rescue centre.) and Matilda, my 17 year old cat. I have to admit, though, and not playing favorites, but Matilda is my pride and joy. (Ok, maybe I am showing a little favoritism. But she's 17. And we've been hanging out for almost 16 of those. You get it, right?)

Now when I have a couple over for a consultation or a shoot, I try to keep the dogs out of the way. As lovely as they are, not everyone is a dog person. And if they show up in black, they won't leave without some golden hair all over their clothes! Matilda, on the other hand, is, well, a cat. There's really no telling a cat what to do, so I just don't bother much. When Samantha and Andrew came by for their consultation, Matilda wandered in. I immediately lost Samantha as she oohed and aahed at Matilda and just decided to go with it. I left the room to make some tea or something, where upon Matilda decided to release a hair ball not 100 yards from the lovely couple. Oh geez. I quickly cleaned it up and tried to make light of it. It didn't seem to throw the couple off too much and they booked me. Whew.....

Samantha and Andrew are getting married in May 2011. I can't wait 'cuz this couple are so relaxed and easy to work with. I hope they find it dido with me. Seems so, as Samantha said they laughed all the way home after this shoot. That makes me feel awesome! If a couple goes away from an engagement session just a little more in love, just a little happier, and on top of it all, laughs on the way home, then I've done my job. The images, of course, need to look great too. That's not luck. But finding a couple like this makes me feel lucky. Lucky that I have a great feline and lucky I get to hang with great couples like this.

Friends Make Great Clients!

Wow. I recently got a little slack on keeping up with my blog. I feel like I let some people down. I mean, my last wedding was a dream job. They're friends first and became clients. It meant so much to me that they even considered me to document their wedding day. We went back and forth a bit to get the package just right, and it all worked out in the end. That's how it should be. Get the package YOU want.

Ross and Christy manage one of my favorite pubs in Watchet, Somerset. Here's the thing. There are quite a few pubs in Watchet and it's hard to say which one is my favorite as we have friends that frequent any number of them. So I don't want to tell the world one pub is more favored over another because I really don't want to offend anyone. Pubs in Watchet, I think, are like moods. Sometimes I'm in the mood to go to the Anchor. Sometimes I'm in the mood to go to the London. But for the most part, The Star Inn was the easiest, closest to home, REALLY good ales and that warm comfy feeling one appreciates in a pub. Bonus is, Ross and Christy are great publicans! (And yes, Christy, your pepper sauce is still superior!!!)

Having said that, their wedding day did not disappoint. Ross made the cake and it was really clever. Christy's dress was amazing and her sister was THE most, so on top of it, helpful and excited person I've ever encountered at a wedding! She really made my job easy and big Kudos and thanks for that:)

The ceremony and reception were held at Raleghs Cross Inn, Exmoor, Somerset. Although I've done a wedding fair there and know the place, I'd never shot a wedding there. The team there were so great in helping me find my way around and organizing the day. Kudos to them!

Although we've relocated to Essex, I always love the opportunity to go back to Somerset to visit friends and shoot. It's outstandingly beautiful and there's never a shortage of shooting locations. This wedding, in particular, was a great event for all the reasons I stated, but also one more. This couple knows ALOT of people, as you can imagine. They kept their wedding a little more on the intimate side, though, and the reception grew in numbers. But it seemed to me that ALL the people there were genuinely happy and supportive of these two people getting hitched. It was gratifying, because I have a pretty good record of my couples still being together. I like that. It means they might have kids. It means they might call me to shoot their pregnancy, then their baby, then their family pics. But most of all, it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside that THESE sort of people are the ones that choose me to shoot their wedding. The kind of people who are genuine. The kind of people who value their bonds with others. The kind of people like Ross and Christy. Thanks guys, and hope you have a great Mexican honeymoon! Vayas Con Dios.

Finding the Right Wedding Photographer within your Budget

Finding the right wedding photographer for your big day is an important and lasting decision. It's an investment, much like buying a car. Here are some ways to get started.

First, you and your fiance should make a list of all the vendors you'll need for your day. You would then each rate your top 3 in order of importance. These may, and very likely will, vary. The bride may rate her dress as the utmost important and the groom may tend to rate the band much higher. It's ok! Don't worry- but remember the first rule of marriage (or is it the third?) COMPROMISE! You'll be doing a lot of this over the coming years, so let's start practicing!

Once you've got an overall budget in mind and a list of vendors in order of their importance, attach a percentage to each vendor. The list might look something like this and this is a good place to start:

Now you can move some things around and make adjustments. Does your Uncle have a cool car and he'll drive you for free? Then splash that money in to another category. Is your best friend a florist and wants to give you half price on your bouquet? Then pop more money on the dress. You get the idea.

Now you have a budget for your photographer. You've got a little flexibility because you decided to go with a DJ instead of a band and have a little extra room in the budget. Visit some local wedding fairs to see what the choices are and bop around on the internet. Wedding fairs are a great resource and happen primarily in the spring and the fall. You can look over many different vendors and photographers will have samples of their albums, products and price lists. You can chat one on one to see what they have to offer and ask any questions that are specific or general to your requirements. If you see a photographer that you particularly like, book a consultation to chat further about your day.

When you're looking at a photographer's work, see if they offer a variety of albums and products. Do you like the albums on offer? Do the images in the albums represent how you'd like your lasting memories? There are many different styles of photography and it's important to choose a photographer that will capture your memories in a way that pleases you.

Now the part where I remind you that investing in your wedding photography is like buying a car. Let's face it- the kind of car we drive says a lot about us. Some people live in smaller homes just so they can drive a nicer car. They'd rather get a heap of a car, then pimp it out so it's all good inside, even if the paint job screams! Some people like a mid budget car with all the add ons- nice stereo, sunroof, tinted windows. Maybe they need a car that fits all their kids, so they go for the 4 door SUV instead of the 2 door convertible. Others prefer a nicer car with just the basics. Some want quality over quantity. Some just want to look cool. The thing is, you likely have a starting budget to buy a car. You might end up with something a little over budget that doesn't have the right stereo, but you can get that stereo later. Maybe you go for something a little less than what you wanted, but you get the sunroof of your dreams! What matters is, you get some of what you want and you budget the rest for a later date.

Here's how I figure it, at the risk of being hounded by Top Gear fans!
Ford Escort- affordable, good gas mileage, small, gets you to work
Mercedes C Class- more pricey, very reliable, mid size, nice to go to France on holiday in
Porshe- pricey, affluent and says it all!

Now relate your kind of car to the type of photography you're after for your wedding. Perhaps you really just want the basics, the Ford Escort- coverage of your ceremony, some group shots and some lovely images of you and your fiance. You can always add on the stereo later- ie- album and prints Are you budgeting for those upgrades in the long run?

Maybe you'd rather have the Mercedes. You want more coverage, an album included from the start and an engagement session to get the jist of it all before the once in a lifetime day.

Or maybe you've got the budget to do it all from the get go. "Let's invest in the Porshe, honey." Get a full days coverage, a main album, albums for the parents, an engagement session with a unique Guest Book, a videographer and 2 photographers for more angles and coverage.

Essex Wedding Photographer Goes to Somerset

Ok. So I did, in fact, used to live in Somerset. I still have some bookings there to fulfill and I LOVE going back to Somerset. For Gill and Tom's wedding, it was an added bonus. They got married at the gorgeous Taunton Registry Office. We just bopped around the corner for some great Bride and Groom shots and, of course there are some lovely ones with the stylin' car they hired, an Austin Healey! What a beautiful day, and even though Tom doesn't like having his picture taken, he looks fab and I thank him for adhering to my ever popular "Just one more shot, just one more!" Congratulations, Gillian and Tom. I hope you had a great honeymoon in Vegas, and remember: What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!

"Going Home" -An Essex Photographer's Blog

I'm thinking of a title for this post and this one seemed the most logical. I recently had the pleasure of doing my niece's senior pics in St. Joseph, Michigan. I lived in St. Joseph for 9 years, the rather informative ones. My dad was transfered there from a little town in Ohio called Chesterland. From living memory until the end of 4th grade, Brooklane Road was my childhood. I mostly rode things in that phase of my life. My mom set me in front of her in the saddle of our mare, Chica, before I could even walk. The next thing you know, I have a Big Wheel (oh geez, some of you are guessing my age, aren't you? Do they still make those things?) After that it was a banana bike, then a 10 speed bike. And yes, I had my own pony. But after 4th grade, we packed up the inside of our world and moved to St. Joseph, Michigan. Snowball the pony and Chica did not go. Luckily, my dog, Spanky was invited!!!

But we couldn't take Brooklane Road with us. We couldn't take the expansive woods, the creek I used to play in, the vines I used to swing on or the tree houses we used to tell secrets in. We couldn't take my best friend, Renee and we couldn't take the long driveway where we used to play Mother-May-I and Red Light, Green Light. We couldn't take the acres of neighbors yards where we played Hide and Seek. We couldn't pack my childhood....

It was a hard move for me, but eventually I settled in to St. Joseph. I made some excellent friends, one of whom I still keep in touch with. She's still my best friend. Her name is Jennifer, but please don't call her Jenny! From 8th grade on, we shared our secrets, our fears, and of course, our boyfriends (although I'm not sure "share" is really the word!) And even though I went o a different High School 3 out of 4 years, she was always there to hang out with during school breaks. She's the only one who never dropped a beat. So naturally, when I got to Michigan earlier this month, I gave Jenn a call. She doesn't live in St. Joe anymore, but I was able to hook up with her around Grand Rapids when I was on my way to Cadillac. (Probably gotta know a little about Michigan to figure this map out...) As always, she didn't drop a beat.

Before I met up with Jenn, as you can see, I spent some quality time in St. Joe at, of course, the beach! When I was a teenager, Silver Beach was THE place to hang in the summer. I am happy to report that it still is! But WOW, it's changed a bit. The older houses look more posh now and the newer houses are practically ostentatious. I used to park my little '74 VW Super Beetle right on the beach. Those days are gone and they now charge $6.00 to park for the day! The pier to the lighthouse looks much longer, (although I'm sure it's NOT!) they've built an indoor carousal and a fountain to play in. But despite all the changes, I still felt the familiarity of the sand, the gentle lapping of the lake, the cool, fresh water and the warm Summer-In-Michigan sun.

Megan, my niece, picked some fabulous locations to do her senior pics. The first place we went to flooded me with long filed memories of Jenn and I just hanging out. In those days the little stretch of beach at the south end was like a secret, quiet paradise. In many ways, it still is. The huge boulders, rusted metal and water logged pylons made for a simple and textured background.

Later, Megan and I went down to the pier, with the muchly photographed lighthouse at it's end. Megan is a great dancer and we had done some shots at the dance studio, but I really wasn't feeling the love there. I wasn't too sure if a teenager would feel comfortable in a tutu on the pier, but Megan didn't blink an eye when I suggested it! She even put on her point shoes and gave me some seriously elegant ballet poses. As I do, I wanted to make the most of her shoot and ended 3 times with, "Just one more location, just one more." It was a day well spent, and I'm still editing the images over a week later!

So why am I settling on "Going Home" as the title of this post? I haven't called St. Joseph home in a very long time. I've lived in over a dozen places since then and if you ask me where I'm from, I'll tell you Colorado- a long way from Michigan! In the end, I decided that "home" IS really where your heart is. And your heart lies in your memories. I have some awesome memories in the cobwebs of my brain- about St. Joe, Silver Beach and Jennifer to name a few. And Megan may not live in St. Joe all her life, but I hope that her Senior Pictures will keep some of the cobwebs in her memories away in her later years. Although it's hard to imagine young, vibrant, fun Megan as she'll be at 30 or 40 years old, I'm glad I got to play a part in her future's past.

Essex Photographer in North Carolina, Senior Portrait

Jaseanda is my neice. She's the daughter of my half sister, Jackie, but lives with her grandmother in Florida. Does it all sound complicated yet? Well, I won't make it too Jerry Springer, but she and her grandmother were visiting North Carolina, as were my husband and I. We went to N.C. after having visited my husband's family in Michigan. While I was Michigan, I photographed my niece, Megan. I mentioned this to Jaseanda and was happy to offer to do her Senior Portraits too.

Jazzy, her nickname, copes with a birth defect that causes her to have a slight limp and her right hand has limited use. She's a perky teenage girl though, full of chatter and silly things to say. Although she is a slow learner, she is about to get her Graduation Certificate next year and everyone is pleased as punch! Jazzy may not be awarded all the opportunities in life that many of us take for granted, but I think she will do the best she can. I feel honored to be able to help her grandmother out with the financial stress that often comes with being a Senior. In America, photographers often charge top dollar for this most popular coming of age photographic opportunity. Rightfully so, and I imagine I will charge much the same when I get back to the States some day and start doing more Senior Pictures. But right now, I'm building my portfolio for that time and getting to know how different it is to work with teenagers than it is to work with adults and babies. I also seem to have a knack, says my husband, with kids with learning difficulties. I foresee myself offering discounted rates to families with disadvantaged children who don't necessarily have the big bucks some have when it comes to hiring a professional to document their teen's most memorable years of their lives.

Roxwell, Chelmsford Wedding Photography

WOW. That's just the first thing that comes to mind when starting to blog about this wedding I had the pleasure of documenting yesterday in Roxwell, Chelmsford, Essex. WOW. What an awesome couple! And I'm not just saying that. For real. I had SOO much fun! That's when I start feeling a little guilty about loving my job so much. But then I remember how hard I've worked to get to where I am and just shoot like a rock star. Like there's no tomorrow.....

So on to the good part. Neil- well, he reminds me a little of Ben Stiller. Is that wrong? I don't know, he was just fun. And sweet, and cheeky. And a way lucky guy. 'Cuz then there's Rachel. One of the most stunning brides I've had to date. The dress was exquisite, her hair perfect, her bridesmaids ROCKED and I have to say, I nearly fell in love with her dad. Everyone was so great and full of genuine joy for this couple. I'm so happy for them and so excited to get working on these images. So here's a taster of just a few I picked out from the bunch.

Essex Photographer Top Ten Tips for Better Wedding Pics

Getting married is the test of two worlds- the world of stress and the world of mega happiness. These two worlds collide on the date of your choice, or the date your favorite venue is available, whichever comes first! There's loads of advice out there and it's fun to read lots of it, some of it helpful and some of it rubbish. Hopefully these tips will be helpful!

Let's face it, I'm a photographer. So I'm biased. But I think most couples are excited by the thought that their special day will be captured by a pro that has a vision compatible with theirs and will produce images that reflect the energy, emotion and overall excitement of the day. These images are the ones you will carry with you for generations. They become an anchor to your memories of the day and convey historical moments in your life to loved ones and friends. This is one of your biggest stamps on the world! So here's a couple of tips to enhance your journey and make the most of those memories:

1.) Trying something new, like hairstyle, makeup, tanning, etc. is a fun and exciting idea. But DON'T do it on the day! Be sure to do run throughs on anything different you are doing on the day so you know how everything is going to turn out. It's fun to plan your trial hair and makeup day, perhaps in combination with your hen night or a special dinner out with your man! You want to look stunning, but you also want your fiancee to recognise you:)

2.) Put together a kit and keep it with your dress. Include items like scissors, safety pins, extra mascara, headache relief, a mini sewing kit, an extra pair of pantyhose, and anything else that might get you out of a bind while your getting ready on the day.

3.) Wear Sunscreen!! I can't stress this enough. And it doesn't matter what time of year your wedding day is. The sun is still there! And it will make you red and blotchy as the day goes on. Put it on after your morning shower and you're all set to avoid skin disaster photos.

4.) Eat! Don't skip breakfast on the day. It will only make you light headed and maybe a bit irritable. Check with your coordinator wherever you are getting ready and see if they can hook you up with some muffins or light bites to have in your preparation room. You're bridesmaids will appreciate it too!

5.) Don't lock your knees up while your standing at the alter. This especially goes for the Groom too! It is not unheard of that a groom just falls over in a faint because he cut off the circulation to his brain! Practice not locking your knees up while standing in a queue just about anywhere you go. You'll be surprised how much you do it on a daily basis.

6.) Break in your wedding shoes. Or even better, if you have a bridesmaid who wears the same size, let her break them in! Hehe, no seriously, wear them around the house a few times for even just an hour at a time. If there are sore spots that turn up, you can address them right away with some moleskin. If they seem a bit too slick on the bottoms, there are no-slip stick ons you can get. But don't mess up your first dance by putting no-slips on, give it a think.

7.) Have a good idea of the day's schedule, but keep it loose. Here's the thing, the day just goes so fast. But don't underestimate how long things take to happen. If you think you're just going to get married, leave the church and arrive at the reception in an hour, think again. Leave time for the "happiness factor." People want to hug you, congratulate you, throw petals on you.... Having a time line is a guideline. Don't worry on the day about being a little late. This is YOUR day, make it last.

8.) Get your nails done. Your hands are going to be in lots of images and you're going to have a stunning new ring on your finger! Check with a nail consultant on the best look for you. It might be a colour that complements your colour scheme, it might be a classic french mani or it might be strong gel overlays. If you have open toed shoes, consider a pedi too! Make it a fun day out with your mom and/or your bridesmaids:) But always refer back to tip number 1!

9.) Don't forget all the stuff you gotta do AFTER the wedding. Make a list of all the people who need to know your new name. The Post-Wedding days can be a little overwhelming too. Before the wedding, you may be taking time off work and putting all those little things aside. After the wedding, you may be going on honeymoon straight away. When you get back, reality will set back in. It will be easier to deal with if you have some lists. Writing things down is a great way to get it off your mind and feel a little less stressed

10.) Allocate some duties to your wedding party. Don't try to remember everything yourself! Let your Best Man be in charge of handing out vendor cheques on the day. Write out your envelopes and cheques a couple of days in advance and hand them over! Let your Maid of Honor be in charge of your dress and accessories. It's good if she can go to your final fitting and practice putting up your bustle. If you have a guest book, make one of your flower girls in charge of it. Kids love easy peasy duties to help you out. It gives them a feeling that they are helping make your day a big success.

Finally, relax and feel confident! You've done all your planning and hired the pros. On the day, kick back and enjoy it! If the starter comes out all wrong, don't freak. If your flower bouquet starts falling apart 3 hours in, it's done it's job. Smile, let go and enjoy! Your pictures are going to show how lovely and relaxed and most importantly, how IN LOVE your are. Let yourself shine and you will help your photographer create the memories of a great day!

Essex Wedding Photographer Chats about Housekeeping

He doesn't say it, but I think my husband believes that the only time I clean the house is:
A. When I'm bored, I mean, really really bored
B. When it gets so bad you don't want to take off your shoes
C. When I have a consultation booked
D. After he mentions the house could use a cleaning
E. When we're having company around that I feel the need to impress (this really isn't very often, therefore, last on the list)

Well guess what! I just cleaned the house. Guess why? Well, I have a consultation tomorrow, of course!

So here's the thing. My husband and I have this sort of unspoken agreement. I always do the laundry, and he occasionally leaves a few bills in his trouser pockets. Because the second rule of Laundry 101 states (The first rule is that you MUST separate your whites- I don't care WHAT detergent you're using!)
If you find money in the washer or the dryer, it is yours!
Personally, I'm saving up for some Jimmy Choo. I'm not picky, really. Either shoes or a handbag. Or both. But in case I don't save up enough, it's going on my Christmas list too!

When I was in about 7th or 8th grade, my english teacher gave us this great option to get a penpal in another country to write to and practice our english. I thought this was a totally cool idea, so I signed up for, like, 6 penpals! Most of them only wrote me back once or twice, some for a couple of years. But there was one that stuck with me.

Now I'm no spring chicken, but I use great beauty products, so I don't much look my age! But I'm here to tell you that I started writing a guy from Turkey over 25 years ago. His name is Bayram. Through letters (and I mean the hand written one that you had to post. You know, in an envelope with a stamp.) we went through our teenage years together, dreaming of meeting one day. After high school, I moved quite a few times, but I always managed to let Bayram know where I was. See, we share the same birthday. That's the connection the penpal company made to hook us up as writing partners. So if all else failed and we didn't manage to keep in touch, we'd send birthday cards!

Bayram went to Uni to become a surgeon. But not just any kind of surgeon- he's a brain surgeon. So we couldn't be any more different! It seemed forever that he was in school, while I was moving around and trying out different professions. My resume includes: Fast Food server, Retail- including shoe sales, which I still remember fondly, waiting tables- which I returned to many times!, hotel front desk supervisor, airline reservations, travel agent, travel director, modeling (boy, THOSE days are long gone!) and a pretty good student when I decided to go back to school. I got my first degree, an Associate of Art, from a community college in Colorado. After that, I decided to give a little bit more and go for the gusto, so I enrolled at the Colorado Art Institute in the Photography department. It wasn't easy, as I certainly wasn't the youngest student in the class by that time. Going back to school after such a long time can be pretty challenging, but I had my head on straight by that time and burned the candle at both ends. I'm glad I stopped putting around, but a bit sad it took me so long to discover my true talent.

Anyway, Bayram is now, what I imagine, top of his field. We talked on the phone one time when he was doing a semester at a college out east- I'm afraid I've forgotten which one. It was an awkward chat, but really nice. Unfortunately, I wasn't in a position to travel that far to see him. But I swore I wouldn't leave this planet until we one day could meet.

Bayram is now married with, I think, 3 kids. We don't keep in touch as much as we used to and often birthdays go by without a card in the post. We recently found each other again on Facebook. Of course, I'm now married and living in England. I figured when we moved here that Turkey wasn't so far away anymore and tried to convince my husband we should take a vacation there. At first he didn't agree. But he has a Dutch cousin who's been there several times and he helped me convince my husband that it would be a great vacation.

We finally made it to Antalya, Turkey earlier this month. Now Turkey is a big country and I wasn't sure where Bayram was living, but I gave it a shot and asked him if he had time to come to Antalya for lunch or something. I'm afraid I might disappoint you here, but he wasn't able to make it. But we were so close! I'm not too bummed over it, because I know we'll go back to Turkey and maybe that will be the magic time. Turkey is such a beautiful country and the people are so welcoming. The food is great, there's so much history and the beaches are fantastic!

The best part about our trip to Turkey (does this feel like a 7th grade report on what you did on summer break?!) was spending time with family and my husband. Sure, I wish I could have seen my old friend Bayram, meet his wife and kids and know what it would be like to see him face to face, hear his voice, find out what his life has been like for the last 25 years. But wishing is half the fun. I'm going to make this dream come true, you just wait!

Essex Photographer Wins Award

Well, you remember Felicity and James, right? If you don't, just read my previous blog. So I loved the images so much that I entered one in a Kubota Imaging Contest on Facebook. I decided to enter the one that the bride and groom said was their favorite. I almost always use a little Kubota Action on my images to at least give them an extra pop, something to set me apart from other photographers. I know my actions pretty well now, so when I'm going through the images I spot almost right away what action I'd like to use on them. This one had lots of landscape around it and I wanted to make it a bit more dreamy, romantic and pull the couple out from the background a bit more. I gave it an action called theEdge, which enhances details and takes away some of that digital haze. Then I used Deep Forest, which gives an image deep, rich colours and glowing shadows. I finished it off with an Edge Burner. I like the Edge Burner action because it gives a vignette feel and pulls the viewers focus toward the central image.

There were 6 winners, and I am grateful to be one of them! I'm not sure what the prize is, but it's from Silverback Imaging, so I'm betting it's pretty good. Silverback is a company, oddly enough, based in Denver (where I'm originally from!) and helps photographers with post production. Post production is something that many new photographers overlook or are inexperienced with. It is vital, however, in the digital age. In the film days, photographers had to know their film, their gear and their meters inside and out. We had to know what was happening when we took the shot. There was no guessing. If we got it wrong, it was very hard to save the image. Digital means that photographers can now figure it out as they go along. It's cool, don't get me wrong, but you end up loosing a lot of really great shots while you're getting it right. This is another good reason to stick with a professional photographer when you want a special event documented. We won't loose those precious moments. We might charge more, but you are paying for experience and our style of photography, something we've honed over many years.

But I digress. Perhaps what I'm leading to is that my prices may be going up soon, so book before they do!

Somerset Engagement, Leather Craftsmen Guest Book

I am so so SO excited right now, because I just finished, I must say, and at the risk of sounding boastful, THE MOST AMAZING guest book I have ever done. It's going to be a Leather Craftsmen, one of the best album makers in the industry. I've been with them since I started weddings and I will always offer these pieces of artwork because Leather Craftsmen has been around, for like, EVER, and so I know they will always be there for me.

The couple in question is not just any couple. When I first moved to the UK, I landed in Somerset. More specifically, Watchet. Now Watchet is kinda a funny place. They call it a Marmite town. You either love it or you hate it. We loved it. But I had to get my business off the ground and I knew that was going to take a while. So I got a job as a receptionist at a nail and beauty shop. That's where I met a lady named Felicity. She is a beauty therapist to the stars. I kid you not. And she is an absolute Rock Star. Her and the other girls taught me everything I needed to know about being English. Like what a "rubber" is. 'Cuz it's a different thing to an American. And like what "pants" are. 'Cuz that's different too....

Now my husband is a nuclear physicist. I know, right? I'm the artist and he's the sciencey like being. I believe in Aliens and he's not really sure about me. But I digress.

So my husband works with some really great people and one of them is this guy named James. He's quite handsome, but super duper shy. And he was single. And Felicity was single. So me being me, I thought, hey- let's get together and go fly kites! And that's what we did. Felicity got pretty flirtatious that day, which was a good sign. And as we walked back to our cars, James in some rather uncertain, yet certain terms (I know that's hard to understand, but I swear it went like that) advised me that he fancied Felicity. So I figured, Done Deal.

Long story short, they are now engaged to be married in June. I am pleased as punch. Now they're going to get this rockin' guest book from the engagement shoot we did at Bristol Zoo. It's going to be Cotton Candy pink leather with a Platinum Japanese book cloth stripe and their favorite image in a raised frame on the cover. It's going to be Rock Star material and I can't think of a better couple to have it!

I can't share much, just a little teaser, 'cuz this one's a surprise present!

Alison and Mark, A Canvey Island Wedding

So this is how this one worked. The bride got on a website where the bride can fill in her details and the vendors she is looking for and those details are forwarded to a select few people, then those vendors contact the client and provide them with a quote for their product and/or services. Alison submitted a request for photography quotes on 23 March. She was getting married on 9 April. All in 2010. I gave her a call and she explained to me that she was having a rather cozy day with close friends and family and just wanted about an hour and a half of professional wedding photography. So I said, no problem. Hey, some people don't want the whole day covered. Some just want the super important bits and leave the rest to friends and family to do the pics. I think that's fine, because it's what the couple wants. After all, it's their day, right?

So Alison had a look at my website, called me back and the contract was in the post. Easy Peasy.

I headed out that day with my normal kit, all organised, reset and lenses clean. As I was cruising along with my sat nav (I can't get anywhere without it, I swear!) I went to pop in my Pink CD, as I normally do on the way to a wedding. "So What" just pumps me up and makes me feel like a Rock Star! I feel like that's a good thing, because if I feel like a Rock Star, it's easier for me to make my couple feel like Rock Stars, savvy? Alas, there was no Pink CD anywhere in my car to be found. It got me thinking about what my horoscope said that day:
"You feel motivated yourself, maybe by the actions of a famous or historical figure. It's possible that the motivation you're feeling is a matter of competition, but the underlying theme is pushing for greater achievement. Develop a plan and follow it if you want to achieve your goals. Don't buckle under criticism. No matter what, don't get into playing ego games with others today: they won't appreciate it." It also said that my compatibility sign for the day was Virgo.

I thought, Hmmmm. What could all this mean?
Well, I found out when I started shooting the group photos. I had some harsh critics around me (none of them Virgos, I imagine!) and one of them was on a roll. Now I don't think too much about what just happened and I don't worry too much about things that haven't happened yet when I'm shooting. I get very focused and try to make the best image I possibly can. I can't tell you how hard I tried to ignore this guy and get people to listen to me as I explained several times that if a person couldn't see me because there was someone taller in front of them, then I couldn't see them either and their face wouldn't end up in the picture. Cest le vie. The rest is what it is.

Despite some of the challenging personalities that we deal with as wedding photographers, I have to say, this was a great group. I don't really have any nightmare stories and maybe that's because I just roll with the punches. The bride was stunning and I just LOVED her dress. The groom was in his Navy uniform and that just made the whole experience feel even more important. The mothers of the bride and groom were ever so lovely and nice and the kids, some tired, loosened up toward the end of my day with some fun, playful shots.

So what did I learn? ('Cuz I always learn SOMETHING!) I learned that patience truly IS a virtue and that if you stay focused (both mentally and in camera, hehe) you can get the results you're looking for. I had a wonderful couple to photograph on a weather perfect day. What else can you ask for? And if a certain Uncle is reading this blog, I hope your pictures came out great too:)

A Little Story

Hmmm. I've been thinking.(Uh Oh, my husband would say- where's the fire extinguisher!) I think I've been neglectful of my blog postings. And to rectify the situation, I'd like to tell you a little story, a little story about a lady from Colorado. Here goes, feel free to comment once you've read my little story:

There once was a youngish lady who lived in Colorado. She had some big dreams, but wasn't very good at nailing down which ones she wanted to make come true. So she tried lots of things, but mostly she waited tables. She knew ART was definitely a passion for her, but she wasn't sure which way to go with it. So she worked and went to school to obtain her Associate of Arts degree while she pondered her future. She did great in all her classes except Cellular Biology. Go figure! She had also taken some photography classes, out of curiosity and really- just something to do. She liked it, but didn't feel she had the finances to delve in to the genre right away.

Then one day she decided it might be worth a try to just go for it. So she enrolled at the Colorado Art Institute in the photography department. Her first computer related class was a bit of an eye opener and she felt way behind the other students, even though she was practically old enough to be some of their mothers! Well, she didn't even know how to turn a computer on, let alone move a mouse around.... But she pressed on. In 1999 she graduated with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Photography with best Editorial portfolio in her class, and won several awards along the way from the Art Director's Club of Denver, among others.

But enough about my best friend. (Hehe..... just kidding, it's me....)

In 2004 I got married to a wonderful man I met when I started my "motorcycle mama" phase. I wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle, so I did. I wanted to own a motorcycle, so I did. (Mind you, I was still waiting tables.) Then I decided I wanted to ride with other like minded people. So I found a motorcycle club (I know what you're thinking, but keep reading!) and I dropped in on one of their monthly meetings. I wasn't expecting to have to speak, but this was an eclectic, mixed group of people with rather outgoing natures. (You can check them out at http://www.harrys-roamers-mc.org/) They asked me to tell them a little bit about myself. So this is what I said:

'Well, I have 2 bikes at the moment, a BSA Shooting Star (which I later found out is actually a modified Scrambler) and a Suzuki 650 Big Single. As a matter of fact, I guess you can call me the "Big Single" girl!'
Geez, what a dork. And that's what a guy named Steve thought too, as he stared at me the entire meeting.
I still have my BSA and I traded in my 650 for a Suzuki Marauder 800cc. I also have a great husband with a BMW monster cruising bike. His name is Steve.

We now live in Essex, England with our 2 dogs- Molson the Golden and Zuzu the I DON'T KNOW WHAT SHE IS OTHER THAN A DOG! and our lovely princess feline, Matilda. My photography skills have come a long way from 1999 when I graduated and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what I do for a living.

But this is the longest blog post I've ever written, so more on that later. I hope you enjoyed my little story and stayed tuned for my "scuba diving" phase:)

Wedding of Yvette and Kirk

Yvette and Kirk got married on New Year's Eve at the Municipal Building in Taunton, Somerset, UK. Although getting married at a registers office may not seem too glamorous to some, you've not been in this historic building! It's absolutely gorgeous! But that wasn't the best part- the rest of the day was in the stylish, award winning Castle Hotel in Taunton. The bride was stunning, the groom was appropriately nervous and all went to plan. What a wonderful day!

Yvette and Kirk's Engagement Photo Session

I met this happy couple at a wedding fair last year. They got a great "on the day" special (of which I will be offering more of at an upcoming fair in Taunton... hint hint nudge nudge.) Yvette loves her choice in venue, the stunning Castle Hotel in Taunton. Kay, the coordinator there, is particularly nice and was generous enough to give us free rein to do photos in the locations that they will be using on their wedding day.
It seemed to me that Kirk and Yvette were having so much fun, as did I (despite a few showers.) It reminds me how much I enjoy my work and I'm looking forward to having fun again with this great couple on their wedding day!

Biking in France

We had a fantastic adventure in France, taking the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilboa Spain, then riding through the Pyrennes and Ariege, on to Carcassonne, then Millau to see the Viaduct. We did a day ride to La Couvertoirade, a medieval village in Aveyron. We rode on to Rocamadour, Dordogne- another medieval village on a cliff- on our way to the sea. Along the way I was stung by a wasp that had flown in to my jacket and stung me 7 times! I took the opportunity to take some pics of a lovely Chateau. We took a break in a very small village called Triaize, Vendee on our way to les Sables d'Olonne, Vendee. Our last stop was at the Le Grande Metairie campground near Carnac where we found some Megalithes at Kermario that date back to as far as 3500 BC! BonJour!

Had a fantastic time at the Taunton School Wedding Fair 29 March 2009. Met lots of nice people, and being the people person that I am, it just didn't feel like work at all:) Congrats to Gillian and Tom and Yvette and Kirk for wrapping up their wedding photography contracts. I'm already excited to document their special day, because I had so much fun getting to know them a little at the wedding fair.

Prague

For my birthday, my husband and went to Prague in October 2008. Although it's a chilly time of year to visit, the streets were still teaming with tourists. The Czech people are friendly and provide good customer service. I wonder, though, if the people that live in Prague ever get tired of the constant stream of tourists. It must be unbearably packed with people in this city in the summer and I'm glad we went in the fall. I actually found it uncomfortably touristy, which is a shame, as it is an absolutely beautiful place, packed with amazing architecture, great food, unique shops (when you look outside the tourist sections) and a turbulent history. Perhaps we'll visit the Czech Republic again, but as far as Prague goes, been there- done that! My main computer is currently in the shop, so more images will be added soon.

Baby Bump

Faith Stone Photography had a great baby bump portrait session in October. Lisa was really excited about the shoot and splurged for a makeup artist to make the session results even better. Cory did a fab job on the hair and makeup and Lisa looked like a true star! If you're pregnant, consider documenting your pregnancy with photography by Faith Stone Photography! It's all the rage, and in some years from now, I'll bet your kids will love to look back on that portion of their life that they couldn't see from the outside:) I've also got some great little albums on offer to put all the greatest images in!

Laura found my website somehow and hired me just before I left on my holiday! And what luck for me. Laura and Ant are a great team and their wedding was just the way they wanted it, low key and laid back. The venue was the gorgeous Glendorgal Hotel in Porth, Newquay, Cornwall. The weather was quite overcast and we had to work around spots of rain, but it made for some dramatic skies and some lovely, soft light. Congrats to a fun couple and enjoy your images! Alison and Andrew's Wedding

What a fabulous day for Alison and Andrew! After many months of careful preparation, this heart warming couple tied the knot at St. Audries Park in Somerset. The day started out a bit on the cloudy side, but the sun came out just as Alison's tiara was put in place. The rest of the day was partly cloudy, a perfect soft box in the sky. It was an emotional day and much anticipated. Alison was quite calm as she and her bridesmaids got ready, but Andrew seemed to be wringing his hands most of the time! The ceremony was quite beautiful with plenty of laughter and tears. Confetti was in abundance and the young bridesmaids were absolutely over photographed, as expected and without denial! I just couldn't help myself.... Just adorable. The day continued on and this couple was gracious to invite me to the remainder of the event as a guest. Thanks so much for a beautiful day. 2008 Watchet Carnival Parade

The 27th of July was the annual Watchet Carnival Parade. My talented husband managed to motorize a couch and went with a friend as Wayne and Garth from Wayne's World. My friend and I went as Carhop Girls. We had great fun! The day was perfect and the parade must have seen twice as many participants as last year. I had so much fun, I didn't take many pictures! It was difficult as I was on roller skates some of the time, and having been MANY years from my prime roller skating days, I was afraid to try to skate and shoot at the same time! Show at Cream Cafe, Minehead

Sarah, the new manager at Cream Cafe in Minehead has asked me to do another show for them in August! I'm very excited for the opportunity and have decided to do a very different theme than the last show, which was "Images of Santorini." This years show will have more environmental portraits, some action shots and a couple of landscapes. The theme is "Western United States." Watchet Carnival Drag Queen Contest

Is there no end to the fun and madness in Watchet, Somerset, UK? NO! On 19 July 2008 at the Anchor Pub on Anchor Street was the official Watchet Carnival Drag Queen Contest. Young and Old, Sober and not so Sober, the locals supported the event as they always do. The winner? A lovely young lad whom you'll see on one of the parade floats! Cambridge, United Kingdom

My husband attended a work related course at Christ's College, Cambridge in mid July. I took the opportunity to tag along and see Cambridge for myself. Did you know there are 35 colleges there, 3 of which are still women only? I was told that some 90 Nobel Prize winners came out of Cambridge University. Wow. I'm impressed. It is absolutely awe inspiring to walk the streets and see all of the colleges. We also had a lovely time punting down the River Cam. I'm ready now to visit Oxford to see what all the competition is about!

This year I've been doing some charity work for the Watchet Carnival Club. They are a great bunch of people and work very hard on all carnival events, held throughout the year. The two biggest events, the parade and the music festival, are being held on separate weekends this year. The parade will be 27.07.08 and the music festival will be over August bank holiday weekend, 22.08.08 to 24.08.08. Why not come on down and enjoy the pleasant village of Watchet? Sardinia, Italy

My husband and I went on a much needed short break to Sardinia, Italy. Although it was before the season technically started, we had a lovely time. The views from our hotel room were amazing, the weather was cool, but nice and we got a nice swim in! The people were very nice and I think I learned a little Italian.

Sardinia is an archeologists dream. There are bunches of ruins, many from the bronze age. We visited one called the Tomb of the Giants, pictured here. From wikipedia:
Giants' grave (Italian: Tomba dei giganti, Sardinian: Tumbas de sos gigantes) is the name given by local people and archaeologists to a type of Sardinian megalithic gallery grave built during the Bronze Age. They can be found throughout Sardinia, and so far 321 have been discovered.

Kelly and Jay's Engagement

Kelly and Jay actually already got married in the lovely state of Colorado a few months ago. Kelly is British and Jay is American. Katrina and Dave's Wedding

Katrina and Dave got married on a perfect May day at the Old Mill Hotel in Bath. Although Katrina was a bit nervous through the ceremony, it all went off without a hitch and Katrina and Dave had a beautiful ceremony. Wedding Photography Workshop

Last weekend I attended a photography workshop at Wroxall Abbey Estate by Warwick. The first day was primarily a shooting day with two fabulous models, Ashley and Corrine. The morning was lovely light, but later in the day, it decided to rain buckets! A very realistic day to be shooting a mock wedding in the English Countryside! The second day was the day I looked forward to, full of post production tips and tricks. I learned loads of useful information, always looking to improve my skills whenever possible. On the 5th of April 2008 Nikki and Will tied the knot. It was a fabulous, sunny day with some clouds, the perfect light for taking pictures! Nikki did an unbeatable job of making sure everything from the flowers to the food to the dress were absolutely perfect. I think she should become a wedding planner! There was so much fun had by everyone and they are truely lucky to have so many great friends and family. Charlotte and Andrew

Charlotte and Andrew were the winners of my free giveaway. I am SO excited that this couple won! They weren't going to get a professional photographer because they had previously spoken to one that was rather rude and really put them off. Like many couples out there, they thought about having a family member take some snaps for them. I think when they see these images, they'll be glad I was there. I know I am! What a great couple:) We had so much fun and that, of course, makes for great pictures. I'm still editing, but I wanted to share a couple of my favorites right away. I also want to thank Charlotte and Andrew for making me a part of their special day. The heavens looked kindly on us for a mild day of weather and Charlotte looked absolutely stunning. Andrew, of course, was as handsome as could be and in a prime state of mind! What a laugh we had! Hope you guys are having a great time on your honeymoon, and I'll speak to you soon....

"Trash The Dress"

It's what you've all been waiting for! When I went home to Colorado for a visit, I talked my best friend, Jamie, into doing a Trash the Dress photo shoot. (Well, it didn't take much convincing, she's a photographer too and dug the idea!) So we got her back in her dress and headed down to a public plaza water fountain. OOOHH what fun we had! Although I think she had more fun than me, the day was definitely filled with giggles for both of us. Thanks, Jamie. I love you!

Colorado Holiday

In September 2007 we went to Colorado for the fabulous wedding of our good friends, Robert and Cory. (You can see some images from their event on the website.) After the wedding we spent a few days in beautiful Ouray and Ridgway, Colorado for the Labor Day weekend. Fun events included a Rodeo and Parade. Here's some of my favorite images!

Since we've been here in Somerset, over a year and a half now, we've meet some great people and had some good times. Some of those great people we call our friends are Robert and Cory. They got engaged recently, and even married to speed up some important paperwork. But they're having a great wedding coming up September 1st, which we are happy to travel back to the States for. Holland and Germany

Budapest

I have a couple different professions, including that of a Travel Director. In April and May I had the opportunity to go to Budapest and Paris. I took advantage of the time off that I had and did a little travel photography! The crew I worked with, I must say, was fantastic and both adventures were time spent making new friends. Jill and Simon Aldridge

Another great wedding at St. Audries Park! Jill and Simon are a wonderful couple, and I must say, very brave! They booked me entirely via my website, foregoing the usual consultation that I always offer at no charge. I rang them a couple of days before the event, just to say hello and spruce up some details. On their way to the ceremony proceedings, they said hello to my assistant, understandably, thinking it was me. (And why not?) She let them know that I was actually inside the Orangery waiting to take the incoming shots! Although Simon claims not to like his photo taken, he photographs wonderfully and the day was lovely and sunny (if not a bit windy.) Jill's dress was absolutely smashing and the whole day was a big hit! I will add several of the photos of their day to my portfolio! Thanks again Jill and Simon, a testament to my reliability and confidence that I will photograph your wedding with every professionalism, whether you ever meet me or not:)

Our Maldive Holiday

My husband, Steve, and I had a wonderful holiday at Paradise Island in the Maldives. A needed break of sun, sand and sea greeted us when we arrived. We were told by previous visitors that there wasn't much to do, so be sure to bring a couple of books. So I bought a couple new ones, including one by my favorite author, Dean Koontz. As I dug in to the first chapter on the plane, however, I realized I had already read that one! If you know anything about my mother, you'll laugh that I'm becoming just like her!

My plan was to complete my PADI scuba certification while I was there, so I didn't mind that I now didn't have enough reading material. As it turns out, I was still a bit too jet lagged the day after our arrival when I attempted my first dive. I completely freaked out and I think the entire scuba centre chalked me off to the "looney" bin! One instructor reminded me that fear is all in your head on this one, and that I just had to "wrap my head around it." So that's what I did. I went back the next day, and the next, and the next. I didn't have time to do the complete certification, but I did manage the first step of aquiring "Scuba Diver" status, with a certificate and log book to show for it all!

Although many Maldives islands really do have nothing much to do besides relax in the water or on the beach, Paradise Island is not one of them. We were so busy, I barely had time for a couple rolls of images. And here's a new challenge, photographing the underwater world! I didn't do so good my first time around, but next time I'll be a better diver and I'll take some better gear down with me to record this fantastic new world I've discovered under the sea!
